Credit Card fraud: If it hasn’t happened to you already, it probably will eventually. It’s a growing problem, and while you can take precautions to protect yourself, there is no sure-fire prevention.
We found a really interesting infographic on credit card fraud from the Huffington Post in an article advising 16 things you must do when your credit card has been stolen.
The most astounding facts from this visual are:
- Credit card fraud resulted in losses of 1.27 billion during 2012.
- Card issuers incurred 63% of those losses and merchants suffered 37%
- In 2012, America made up 47.3% of the global payment card fraud loss
- 67 percent more Americans were hit by financial data theft in 2012 than in 2010

Experts advise the 16 things you must do if your credit card has been used fraudulently:
- File a police report and keep a record of it.
- Check all of your other cards.
- Dispute fraudulent transactions with your bank.
- Order a credit report from one of the three major credit bureaus.
- Lock your credit report.
- Check with the USPS to ensure your mail isn’t being forwarded
- Look into 3D Secure.
- Look into Single Use Credit Cards.
- Review your bank statements.
- Review your bank’s liability policy.
- Check your spouse’s cards.
- Review where your data is available publicly online.
- Request EMW technology cards.
- Remain vigilant for duplicate card readers.
- As a last resort close your accounts and start over.
- Notify bank accounts of travel plans.
