“Brooklyn Duo Charged in Israeli Mail Theft Scheme” — July 30, 2009
RAMAPO, N.Y. (AP) — Police have accused two Brooklyn men of stealing mail and checks from suburban New York residents. Ramapo police say Eliiya Aqva and Sharon Benshusahan, both of Brooklyn, took mail from residents in the Village of Wesley Hills.
Police found more than 100 pieces of open mail inside a minivan the men were driving on Sunday. They say an investigation with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service found that checks for small amounts had been cashed but larger denomination checks had been sent to Israel.
Police charged both men with possessing stolen property and burglar tools, both misdemeanors. Both men were freed after posting $5,000 bail. The Rockland County District Attorney’s Office could not immediately provide their lawyer’s names.
