Lost Keys
Great! You can quickly and easily order a replacement key for your mailbox HERE.
If you have a flat key, replacements can be found HERE. When you place your order simply enter in your 6-DIGIT KEY NUMBER beginning with D00, A01 or L01.
If you have a round key replacements are available HERE. We’ll just need to know the 3 digit “key number” and also whether “MAIL BOSS” is imprinted on the key, to indicate which generation of round key combinations you have.
Unfortunately, we do not track key numbers on sold units and we do not display the key number anywhere on the outside of the unit. Please contact our customer service department, give us a call at 1-800-589-7990, or shoot us an email at info@mailboss.com and we would be happy to advise on next steps.
MailBoss Installation
No, not at all! All of our curbside mailboxes are very easy to install and installation could be completed by any typical Do-It-Yourselfer or handy homeowner in less than 30 minutes - especially if you already have a post or mounting structure in place where an existing mailbox is installed. All of our curbside units include mounting hardware for wood. Some of our curbside units feature our innovative and patented Fast-Trak mounting system, which allows you to not even have to put your hand inside the box to mark holes or tighten bolts. By comparison , our competitors’ mailboxes are quite difficult to install, because they require you to work from the confines of the inside of the box - or mount non-securely from the outside of the unit where anyone can easily remove your installation. The innovative design of our locking mailboxes allows you to install the Mail Boss in just minutes, but without compromising the security of your mailbox.
In short, yes! All of our curbside mailboxes include as many mounting patterns as we can reasonably include in the floor of the unit. Additionally, you can always drill additional holes in the floor of our unit or if applicable, through the fast-trak mounting plate - just be sure to touch up any exposed metal with a little bit of enamel paint (or even some nail polish). Of course, we include our mounting pattern, most manufacturers mounting patterns, and the mounting pattern required for a 4x4" wood post. Email us at info@mailboss.com for the mounting pattern diagram for the unit you are interested in!
Most of the posts we sell are 43” In-Ground steel posts. In-Ground posts are used for most roadside applications, and are generally buried in the ground and secured in place with concrete. Additionally, any of our posts can be attached to our baseplate. Typically, a 27" or 38" post is used in combination with the baseplate to set your mailbox up for the proper height installation on a curb or surface-level install. The Surface Mount 27" Post is ideal if you have a 4-8” lifted curb. The 38" post installed on the Baseplate is ideal for installations where the mounting location is 4" or less above the raised surface.
Multiple Mail Boss mailboxes can be installed on a single post with the use of a Spreader Bar. Spreaders, available in two, three, and four box designs, allowing you to install up to four Mail Boss locking mailboxes onto a single post. All the hardware you need is included. For installation, dig a 1′ x 1′ x 1′ hole and mount the post level in at least two bags of cement. When mounting more than one box on a single post, we strongly recommend that you drive lengths of rebar from the hole into the surrounding dirt at outward angles leaving a portion of the rebar exposed in the hole before installing the post and pouring the cement. We also reccomend you dig the hole deeper and wider using a treated wooden 4×4 post which will insert into our steel post. This will dramatically stabilize the post with the additional weight of more mailboxes. Mail Boss posts and spreader bars can only support up to four (4) MailBoss curbside mailboxes. For more information please go to the post installation instructions. If you need to install more than 4 MailBoss mailboxes in one area, you can use multiple posts and Spreader Bars. Alternatively, you may use a gang plank to securely mount many MailBoss mailboxes, as long as the integrity of the wood and build of the structure is sound.

MailBoss Product Features
Yes, all of our curbside Mail Boss security locking mailboxes have been approved by the US Postmaster General. You can find our curbside mailboxes listed on their website, listed under Epoch Design on Page 9, HERE.
In order to stamp “US Mail approved by the Postmaster General” on a mailbox, the manufacturer must demonstrate that their manufacturing process is sound, and that the product meets a certain level of quality and integrity when subjected to harsh environmental conditions. However, the USPS does not include level of security as criteria for approval. In fact, we have found that the vast majority of US Mail approved security mailboxes can be opened with a small screwdriver and very little effort. Some can even be broken into by hand! Overall, the USPS approval process ensures that all curbside mailboxes are reasonably safe and efficient for mail carriers to use.
No mailbox is 100% theft proof. However, we have spent hours trying to break into our locking system with little success. Most US Mail approved locking mailboxes on the market can be opened in a matter of seconds with a screwdriver, or even by hand. Those units are typically manufactured in “secure” 18 gauge to 22 gauge steel, aluminum or plastic - with flimsy locking systems - and can easily be bent, broken or destroyed with minimal effort. Mail Boss makes formidable mailboxes, that are designed to seriously stand up to most any vandalism and theft attempts made against them. Our patented lock design features a positive door locking system, which deters thieves from prying the door open even with larger tools. Our units CAN ultimately be broken into... so can a bank vault. The difference between our units and our competitors is that for the roughly the same price you can have the unit that the thieves will decide to skip.
Mail BossTM currently makes two major variations of mailboxes, locking curbside mailboxes and locking wall-mount mailboxes. Our curbside models are single, individual mailboxes designed for to be used by a residential home as the primary means of securely receiving their USPS mail deliveries. Our wall-mount units are typically mounted to the side of a house or building, and can only be used if by residences to receive US MAIL deliveries if they are already approved for walk-up delivery.
Every style Mail Boss mailbox – curbside, house mount, or multi unit – comes with all the required hardware for installation. You will receive the correct sized drill bit and lag screws for installing the mounting plate to wood. If you choose to mount your Mail Boss to any of our posts, we provide the necessary bolts. Finally, each box comes with three keys. We have over 2000 unique key combinations to help ensure that no one has unauthorized access to your unit.
Because Mail Boss mailboxes are constructed from the most durable and heavy-duty materials, they are much heavier than the average locking mailbox. Made of 12 and 14 gauge galvanized, powder–coated, cold rolled steel, the Curbside Mail Boss weighs nearly 40 lbs. The Townhouse and the Metro, both made of 14 and 16 gauge galvanized, powder–coated, cold rolled steel, weigh approximately 18 lbs each. The Mail Manager, constructed of 14 & 16 gauge steel galvanized steel, powder-coated steel weights approximately 23 lbs. Our heaviest curbside unit, the Package Master, weighs in at a hefty 51 lbs!
Incoming/Outgoing Mail
The mail carrier does NOT require a key for individual locking mailboxes. It is USPS policy to not carry keys for individual residential mailboxes. The mail carrier delivers your mail by accessing the upper, unlocked door on your mailbox - the one that is stamped: US MAIL
Yes, all of our mailboxes will receive some size of package. The incoming mail slot of the original Mail Boss is 1.9″ H x 10.5″ W – just large enough to receive a box of checks. The Package Master and Mail Manager mailboxes feature bin-style doors and will easily accept small packages such as most books, prescription mailers, bubble mailers and most any packages that the USPS typically delivers. The Metro and the Townhouse wall-mount mailboxes cannot accept a box of checks but can easily accept mail bundles and most flexible, large envelopes with ease - featuring an incoming mail slot with dimensions of 1.75″ x 14.5″.
Like any other individual, curbside mailbox, the Mail Boss cannot guarantee the security of your outgoing mail. For this reason, as a preventive measure of security we recommend depositing your outgoing mail at the nearest Post Office location or USPS blue box.

MailBoss Customer Questions
All of our curbside units will mount to the top of a standard 4×4 or 4×6. We include standard lag screws with all our curbside units for mounting to a wood surface. However, because a vertical 4x4 will have the grain running the same direction as the screws, the attachment of them will not be as secure as you might like. We would recommend attaching a 16" 2x8 or 2x6 with long wood screws through the top. This will create a more secure mounting surface for any of our curbside mailboxes. Then the lag screws securing the mailbox to the wood will have much more bite and the attachment of the unit will be much more secure and difficult for a thief to remove.
Those numbers sure are adhesive! At most any drug, grocery or hardware store you can find a product called Goo-Gone that is meant for removing adhesives. Please don't use harsher versions of this, such as Goof Off - as they can damage the finish. You can also use a plastic edge like a credit card or a 'plastic razor' or plastic scraper. We do not recommend using any steel or metal sharp edge, as they will scuff or scratch the finish. Using a heat gun may also help, just be careful to not melt the adhesive onto the finish as this will make it even more difficult to remove!
Very good question. This is covered in the post instructions which can be found in the box. The posts were designed so that a treated 4×4 will fit inside them. If you wanted your post to be buried 18″ you simply insert the 4×4 into the post so that 6″ of post protrudes out from the steel on the bottom. In some areas like Maine people go to 3.5′ on posts. Just be sure to check with local laws and regulations in your area before cementing your post in place.
We also recommend using “rebar” stakes going out from the hole at angles before the cement is poured, especially when more than one Mail Boss is mounted on one post. The Post has holes near the bottom that you can use to secure the wood inside the post.
Originally there were 300 unique locks for the Townhouse and in all of the new units produced August 2008 or later there are a new unique 500 combinations. We will most likely continue to change out lock sets every year or so to ensure the security of our customers.
Update November 2022 - We currently have over 2000 unique keyways!
