This is a followup to the post I made below where I said the lock I received didn't fit a 5/16" shackle.
I looked at ordering a 9/32 shackle (7MM) but there are almost no outdoor combination locks with a 9/32 shackle. They either have 6mm or 8mm. 6mm would be too small and 8mm is what I had and that didn't fit.
I ended up giving up and just drilling out the lock I had so the 8mm shackle lock would fit the 8mm shackle.
That worked. After putting things together, the lock plate wouldn't really go over the pin on the inside to close. I sanded the inside of the plate down a bit and it still wouldn't really fit. I then bent the lock plate until it fit over the pin. It is still a pretty snug fit.
It all works but required drilling, sanding and bending to get it to work. I would have liked to have bought the old combination lock that MailBoss used to sell but it is not available any more. I want a combination lock so I don't have to carry a key around. I have fingerprint locks on my house so I don't need to carry keys around for other things.
I have another MailBoss mailbox and it has the old combination lock which has worked fine.
This MailBoss box was a replacement for an older one I had that had the old combination lock on it. A car ran over the mailbox at about 60mph, destroying the old combination lock and sending the box and pole flying so I bought a new box.
I not have a combination lock on the new box again, albeit with a padlock I have to take off to open the box, so I'm relatively happy with things but it did require tooling to get it to work and I would have rather been able to buy the old combination lock where you didn't have to remove a padlock and put it back to open and close the box.
Bought a Diyife combination padlock with a 8mm shackle advertised. The one I got has a 7.8mm shackle. A 7.8mm shackle is 0.307087 inches which is 4.9/16 inches so less than 5/16". The Mailboss HASP lock says it supports shackles between 9/32 and 5/16 inches. The 7.8mm shackle does not fit in the HASP lock. I am using digital calipers.
My measurement of the hole in the HASP locks shows 7.3mm at the most narrow point. This is 0.287402 inches which is 4.6/16" and 9.179/32". So, a 9/32 shackle will work but a 5/16" will not work. Really annoying because I wanted the largest shackle possible for security. Please fix your advertising. Can't review beyond this because I need to buy a new combination lock.
Great quality easy to assemble just the perfect mailbox with tough security features.
I wanted to replace the 12-disk wafer lock with the simple hasp lock and the hasp-lock latch would not engage. I followed the instructions thoroughly, step by step, several times.
I tried to flip the latch over, space out the latch differently, even thought about modifying the latch with a torch or grinder by opening the latch jaw or removing enough of the cam to fit over the peg...
It appears the latch does not go high enough to fit over the fixed peg, it just hits the latch-peg it is supposed to go over to hold the door closed. It happens on the way up and I know it is supposed to be a little tight, but it never fits over the fixed peg it latches onto, it just hits the fixed peg. I even tried to use the wafer-lock latch, but it is a 'square' vs 'star' attachment to the cylinder.
I may try again, but for now I am leaving the key in the mailbox, which defeats the purpose of a locking mailbox?
I don't know if I got the right part at this point. Thinking about putting my phone in the mailbox to take a video and see what is really happening inside. It shouldn't be this difficult. Not impressed.
