USPS Mailbox Approval 101

USPS Mailbox Approval 101

If you're familiar with locking mailboxes like ours or another company's chances are you've seen "USPS Approved" proudly declared. But what does it actually mean to be approved by the USPS?

What USPS Approval Means

In order to stamp a mailbox with “US Mail approved by the Postmaster General," the manufacturer must successfully demonstrate two things:

1. A sound manufacturing process.

2. Meet a certain level of quality and integrity when the mailbox is subjected to harsh environmental conditions.

What USPS Approval Doesn't Mean

USPS does not include the level of security as a criterion for curbside locking mailboxes. In fact, we find that the vast majority of USPS approved security mailboxes can be opened with a small screwdriver and very little effort. Some boxes can even be broken into by hand. With many of the “hopper bin” incoming mail slots, one can simply reach in and retrieve the mail with no tools or force.

At Mail Boss, we believe no matter what the requirements, if manufacturers are going to use the terms “USPS Approved” and “Security Locking Mailbox” on their product, they should be able to back it up with some level of security. Many consumers see this terminology and trust that the USPS, a government entity, is looking out for the security of their mail. Furthermore, I think that it is irresponsible, if not dishonest, for companies to manipulate the consumer thought process in this way.

Not all locking mailbox manufacturers use these misleading tactics. There are several very secure curbside locking mailboxes available other than the Mail Boss (though they all cost more). Overall, though, the vast majority of secure locking mailboxes are not very secure.

It is up to the companies that produce first-rate locking mailboxes, like Mail Boss, to make consumers think twice before buying an inferior product and let them know they have better alternatives. For high-quality, locking security mailboxes, you can trust our superior quality and construction. Not sure which mailbox is the right fit for you? Read our buying guide here.
